To Be-Shewat

According to rabbinic sources, the 15th of Shewat (January – February) is regarded as the New Year`s Festival of fruit bearing trees in terms of the sabbatical year, the tithing and other purposes. This festival has almost no ritual significance. Over time, however, it has assumed a secular sense as a day when school children, in particular, plant trees, and the Jewish National Fund and local authorities attend to reforestation in by. During this month, fruit-trees begin to blossom – with almond trees being the first – even though it is often still bitterly cold.
